Food safety as a strategic pillar for the Chilean meat industry

ChileCarne took part in the seminar “Food Safety as a Strategic Pillar for Marketing Meat Products: Perspectives from Politics, Science, and International Trade,” held on Tuesday, September 9, at the Radisson Blu El Bosque. The event, organized by Mérieux NutriSciences, analyzed the challenges and opportunities facing the Chilean meat sector. At the seminar, ChileCarne Business Manager Rodrigo Castañón outlined Chile’s main accomplishments and progress in the production and export of pork and chicken.

Food safety is a cornerstone of the sector’s international expansion and growth. This approach embraces conditions and practices that keep our food safe, preventing contamination and foodborne illnesses. Raising overall awareness of these risks is urgent because ensuring food safety and security builds trust among consumers and international trading partners.

According to Rodrigo Castañón, “our competitive advantage as a country lies in our ability to comply with the most demanding national and international standards and to demonstrate that our processes and foodstuffs are safe and free from microbiological, chemical, and physical contamination.” The entire supply chain follows strict certification, quality assurance, hygiene, and disinfection practices.

The seminar featured Dr. J. Emilio Esteban, Chief Scientific Officer at Mérieux NutriSciences, a global leader in comprehensive food safety and microbiological solutions. The specialist, formerly Undersecretary for Food Safety at the USDA and former chair of the Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Hygiene, is internationally recognized for his expertise in food safety policy and science.

Likewise, Esteban Canales, head of the SAG’s Livestock Protection Division’s Safety and Certification Department, underscored the importance of safety as a strategic tool for accessing and maintaining a competitive edge in global markets.

ChileCarne appreciates the opportunity to participate in seminars like this one, which help consolidate the Chilean meat industry’s standing as reliable, sustainable, and committed to food safety at a global level.
